For this assignment, students will write a 3-4 page narrative, detailing a moment/place/person that positively impacted their life or community. Examples could include a teacher encouraging them to pursue a specific field, a notable figure in their community that affected their life in some way, or a positive change in mindset. Students are expecting to incorporate course material, such as following a plot structure, utilizing story elements, and engaging audience's imagination and senses via literary devices. This assignment will be scaffolded throughout the semester, with multiple opportunities to brainstorm during in-class free writing activities and gain peer feedback in discussion board posts.
Students will learn about and analyze various plot structures used for story-telling
Students will know how to write an effective story from a first-person point of view.
Student will be able to identify and use story elements (characters, setting, problem, resolution, and theme)
Students will be able to identify and use literary devices (dialogue, simile, metaphor, etc.).
Student will be able to write about a moment/place/person/thought process that positively impacted their life or their community
Students will learn the various stages of the writing process, such as brainstorming, outlining, revising, and listening to peer-review
