Here I have listed some scholarly articles and studies I have found that have helped shaped my pedagogical practices for FYC.
"Cognitive Presence in FYC: Collaborative Learning that Supports Individual Authoring" by Mary K. Stewart
This study explores how student collaboration impacts learning by studying two courses and observing how students react to collaboration amongst peers in-person versus online. If you would like to know about my thoughts regarding collarboration, you can read my blog post, here, as well as my teaching philosophy, here.
"Revising a Writer's Identity: Reading and 'Remodeling' in a Composition Class" by Nancy Welch
I really like this article as it describes the power in which instructors hold over their students, and students can lose parts of their identities while becoming something their professors would deem acceptable. This article also discussed the importance of revision and how writing can act as therapy.
"A Theory of Human Motivation" by Abraham H. Maslow
This article introduces Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, which states that humans beings that specific needs that has to be fulfilled in a specific order. You can find my more in-depth summary of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and how this theory relates to my teaching philosophy, here.
"A Dynamic Theory of Human Motivation" by Abraham H. Maslow
This article expands Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, stating that motivation is an ongoing process that can be influenced by internal and external factors. You can find my more in-depth summary of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and how this theory relates to my teaching philosophy, here.
"An Empirical Test of a New Theory of Human Needs" by Clayton P. Alderfer
Alderfer expands upon Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs into what is known as Alderfer's ERG, by grouping the level of needs into three categories and stating people can navigate the pyramid of needs at any time rather than in a specific order. Although Alderfer states that one often navigates the pyramid due to what they value and their current stage in life, Alderfer recommends that people fulfill at least one stage from each of his three categories. You can find my more in-depth summary of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and Alderfer's accompanying ERG theory, here.
